Pass The Crown
What is Pass the Crown?
Pass the Crown sets out to prove that cosplay and performance are for everyone - specifically BIPOC cosplayers and performers interested in portraying canonically white characters. They should be afforded the opportunity to look and feel their best regardless of their ethnicity without being called "the Black/Brown/Asian etc. version" and be photographed by high-quality photographers who are experienced and capable of photographing and editing melanated skin. BIPOC cosplayers and performers are too often treated as second class and seen as "difficult to photograph" and "inaccurate" by both the cosplay and party communities. They deserve the same love and attention and respect as non-BIPOC cosplayers and performers, and this project aims to offer exactly that opportunity.
In August of 2020, Wigs Everlasting and CosFam Productions, along with eight perfect models, set out to show the world that it is time to Pass the Crown. We stressed every possible safety measure concerning the COVID-19 pandemic and set out to prove an important point - that cosplay and performance are for everyone. It is time that BIPOC felt comfortable bringing any storybook character to life. It is time the party community gave their BIPOC performers more opportunity to spread magic. And it is time that they be afforded the opportunity to do so in the same quality of costuming and photography that non-Black cosplayers and performers are given.
Black Lives Matter.
